April - 2016 - Updated Wizard of Oz Festival Information & A Survey

Hello to Everyone:

We are now six and a half weeks away from Festival time! Pretty exciting! Meanwhile, some changes have been made regarding certain events. Most importantly:

- The opening night film will be “Everybody Sing”
- A Farewell Breakfast has been added. See below
- Information about the food is now available
- Information on Dorothy’s Farm animals and Emerald City Fest events has been added.

It’s a good idea to review our new list.

As of last week, The Wizard of Oz Festival and purchase of tickets is now available on our website

You may also purchase tickets over the phone. 
Beginning May 1, the Judy Garland Museum will be open Monday thru Saturday
Beginning Memorial Day Weekend, we will be open seven days a week.


A Survey for Judy Garland Fans

As we prepare for Judy Garland’s Centennial, we’d like to ask your opinion about what you’d like to see in our shop for purchase. Another words, what kind of Judy Garland Mementos would you like to see. Some of the items may be available much sooner!

Here are a few suggestions to give you some ideas:
T-Shirts – What image or Film?
Sweatshirts? Aprons? Caps? Slippers?

Figurines – What films or performances:
Dorothy? Meet Me In St. Louis? A Star Is Born? Carnegie Hall?

Dolls: What Film or Career Point?

High Tea and Style Show in the Judy Garland House

Come and enjoy a tour of the Judy Garland Historic House given by Dorothy. See a style show with replicas of some Judy Garland film costumes.
Experience Coffee/tea and pastries served in the lovely home where the future star was a little girl known simple as “Baby Frances Gumm.”

A Tribute to the 80th Anniversary of Judy Garland’s Film Debut

7:00 pm - Josh Gallagher – Piano Jazz Concert
 Josh Gallagher plays a dazzling jazz tribute to Judy’s musical film legacy. Gallagher, who hails from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, returns this year with some of your favorite Garland songs.


8:00 pm - “Everybody Sing” (1938)
Celebrate Judy’s film legacy with her 1938 film, also starring Fanny Brice, Billie Burke, Allan Jones and Reginald Owen. Judy plays a young girl who is a member of a very eccentric theatrical family, and who can’t help singing jazz. Short introductory notes by John Fricke & Michelle Russell. (Approximately 91minutes)

“They Remember Judy”


John Fricke shows a rare video montage of his 1980s and 90s interviews with people who knew Judy. Participants include: Wilma Casper (who lived with the Gumms in 1925), June Allyson, Alan King, Hugh Martin, Norman Jewson, and many others. Many of these interviews have never been seen by the public. These clips along with Fricke’s comments and anecdotes should make this a fascinating event for Garland fans.

The “Judy Around Town” Tour

Paul Herrick and Joe Malinovsky, experts on Garland/Gumm sites in Grand Rapids, will conduct a tour by car and on foot, showing sites important to Judy and her family during the time they lived in Grand Rapids.

“Judy Remembers Dorothy”


John Fricke will lecture on Judy’s memories of “The Wizard of Oz,” what it meant to her, and the manner in which Dorothy Gale accompanied her throughout her life. This will be a straight lecture with no video.

John Fricke presents clips and commentary on the best of Judy's television work across the last years of her life: dazzling solos, plus duets with Vic Damone, Sammy Davis, Jr., Perry Como and others. Includes a special showing of Judy’s famed white microphone from the CBS television series and "The Ed Sullivan Show" (1965).
