Garland Letter from Home - Update on Wizard of Oz Fest June 8 - 10

JUDY GARLAND TALENT CONTEST POSTPONED

The Judy Garland Museum announced today that the Judy Garland Talent Contest for youth, ages six through eighteen, which was scheduled for Thursday, June 8^th, 7:00 p.m. at the Reif Center for the Performing Arts has been postponed for a later date this year.

“With school getting out and the Reif Dance Spring Show scheduled for the same weekend,” said John Kelsch, director of the Judy Garland Museum, “we feel there will be a better date when more students will have the time to take part. It’s only fair that more young people get a chance to compete for these great scholarships.”  It looks like the contest will be re-scheduled for some time in the fall, so stay tuned.

SUMMER STOCK on THURSDAY, JUNE 8^th at 7:00 pm

In place of the Judy Garland Talent Contest, the Museum plans to show Judy Garland’s 1950 hit movie, “Summer Stock,” also starring Gene Kelly, Marjorie Main and Phil Silvers. It’s a great summer musical about putting on a show on a farm. Included among its hits are “Get Happy,” and “You, Wonderful You.” In addition, Eau Claire, Wisconsin native jazz musician, Josh Gallagher, will give a short concert prior to the film. Thisevent will take place at the Judy Garland Museum, at 7:00 p.m. Suggested donation: $5.00.

“Happy Anniversary, Judy”

A video lecture traces some of the highlights of Judy Garland's adult career on their special 2017 anniversaries, including her Palace dates, top-rated TV special with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, I Could Go On Singing (1962), her Tony Award, and the birth of her daughter, Lorna (1952). Hosted by John Fricke.

“The Wizard of Oz” (1939)

The classic film, starring Judy Garland, will be shown in the finest Blu-ray on a JUMBO Screen outdoors. Showing begins at dusk. Thanks to the support of Woodland Bank.

Dash for the Ruby Slippers 5K

A Festival first! The Dash for the Ruby Slippers 5K with Oz promises to be a lot of fun. First Place wins a trophy. Also "Best Dressed Costumed Runner" will win a trophy. Each early bird paid participants will receive a T-shirt.

Emerald City Fest

A fun event for kids of all ages: Games, Oz Projects, Carriage Rides, Scavenger Hunt and more. Meet characters from The Wizard of Oz and take pictures with them!

Dorothy’s Farm Animals

Visit Dorothy's Farm and meet an assortment of farm animals. Expected are: chickens of many varieties and colors, ducks, turkeys, baby goats, piglets, lambs, alpacas, dog, cat and kittens.

Presenting “We’re Off to See the Munchkins” – a Documentary Film

Brief reminiscences from Festival attendees about their "in-person" encounters with some of the "little people" who played Munchkins in "The Wizard of Oz" film--followed by a screening of the rare, feature-length 1993 documentary.

“CHASING RAINBOWS: THE ROAD TO OZ”

 

Come and celebrate Judy Garland’s 95^th birthday with our keynote speaker, Tina Marie Casamento Libby, the conceiving producer and creator of "Chasing Rainbows: The Road to Oz," a brand-new stage musical about Judy Garland, her family and her co-workers. The show covers her early life from 1926 to 1938 when she becomes Dorothy. Tina Marie will discuss the development of the production and share video clips from the show.
